Caring for your leather items properly is crucial to keeping them supple and beautiful. With careful storage, cleaning, and conditioning, your leather can last through many years of enjoyment.
One of the most important steps to keeping your leather like new is to keep it free of dust and debris. Particles can penetrate the surface of the leather and damage the fibers, making it weak. Gently rub leather after use with a warm (not hot!), damp, non abrasive cloth to remove any surface dirt. For items that contain stitching, special leather brushes are available that will brush particles from the crevices. For stubborn spots and stains, use a specialty leather cleaner or a mixture of warm water and a scent free, exfoliant free mild soap. Do not use any harsh cleaners that can strip oils and protectants from the leather. Avoid cleaners that are petroleum or mineral oil based, as these can damage leather over many uses. We like Lexol-PH leather cleaner, but there are many great products now on the market. In the case of severe soiling, contact a professional leather cleaner.
After cleaning, lay your leather item out to air dry. Do not use a hair dryer, clothes dryer, or lay it out in direct sunlight as excessive heat and UV rays can prematurely age leather. For suede type leathers, brush gently after drying.
Conditioning leather is the key to keeping it smooth and supple. When leather leaves the tannery, it is lubricated with special oils to help maintain its flexibility and strength. Over time these oils need to replenished. We do not recommend an all in one leather treatment like Saddle Soap. The products contain cleaners as well as conditioners and can actually strip protective oils from the leather over time. Lexol also makes a very nice leather conditioner, but it is not meant for suede or extra soft glove leather. We have also tried Leather Magic conditioner with promising results.
If you are going to hang your item for storage, do so after it is completely dry, and use a wide hanger to help it maintain its shape. Never store leather in a plastic bag, a cloth garment bag is highly preferred as it allows the leather to breathe and helps eliminate the risk of mildew. Store leather away from prolonged exposure to direct light and heat. Avoid any creased folds.
When wearing leather, avoid spraying perfumes, hairsprays, or sunscreens as they may cause damage. Use these items prior to putting your leather items on.
Follow these simple guidelines to get maximum life and enjoyment from all your leather goods!
